Norm Magnusson (born March 20, 1960) is a New York-based painter and sculpture. Magnusson is also a political activist and the founder of the 1991 'art movement funism'. Norm Magnusson is a photographer who is very enthusiastic and enjoys showing/communicating messages through his work normally to do with social or political themes. One of Magnusson's most well known projects is called '1-75' where he made historical marker signs with social and political content on and placed them in about fifty rest stops on the interstate-75 highway. For this project Norm Magnusson said "My goal for this project was not to incite, but to inspire thought amongst those who travel on this route".
Norm Magnusson then created a project in 2009 called 'Decorating Nature' where he has so far created one hundred pieces of artwork of which he painted patterns and used different colours onto different types of nature such as leaves, trees, rocks, pine cones, acorns etc. Magnusson said that for this project he created it to have some fun and that he strives to create art that is both beautiful and meaningful, art that is aesthetically and intellectually accessible and deals with important themes.
These are the best two photographs I liked from Norm Magnusson's portfolio called 'Decorating Nature' and are the two that inspired me when creating my own (photos down below). I really like the left one because I love the colours used and how he has painted the whole leaf with these straight lines repeating the blocks of colour. I also really like how Magnusson has thought about the placement of the leaf and instead of maybe putting it in the tree the leaf came from, he has put the leaf on the ground with the dirty dried up brown leaves. I feel that this gives a good effect of contrast and makes the painted leaf stand out more from the dull brown leaves. I also really like this photograph on the left because it shows how well Magnusson has decorated the nature an transformed an everyday dull tree leaf into this bright colourful piece of artwork. I chose this photograph on the right and really like it because its very different to the first one on the left. I feel its really different because of how instead of painting a healthy leaf and putting it next too dead leaves magnusson has painted a dead leaf and placed it with a healthy green plant. In this photograph instead of using bright colourful contrasting colours to make the leaf stand out more Magnusson has used two simple colours (green and white). I really like how Magnusson has also just painted with these colours on one side of the leaf because it shows how the leaf has been transformed from a boring brown dead leaf into a bright green leaf with a spotty white pattern.
